What is the minimum lateral distance you must maintain when overtaking a cyclist, with a motorbike?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. 1 m.

Explanation

In the photo you are driving along a narrow forest road, and ahead of you a cyclist is riding along the right-hand edge. When you overtake him on a motorcycle, you keep a lateral clearance of at least 1 m - answer A.

The Road Traffic Act states that a driver must exercise particular caution when overtaking, and in particular keep a safe distance from the vehicle or road user being overtaken; when overtaking a bicycle, a cycle cart, a moped, a motorcycle, an electric scooter, a personal transport device (UTO), a person on a mobility aid or a column of pedestrians, this distance must not be less than 1 m. There is only one number, and it does not depend on what you are overtaking with - a motorcycle with a sidecar (answer C) must keep the same one-metre distance, only measured from the edge of the sidecar, which can be difficult on a narrow road. Two metres (answer B) is a made-up value, although on a forest road without a shoulder it is sensible to give the cyclist more room: he may go around a pothole or a branch and move to the left, and the gust of air when you go past quickly can make him wobble. In the photo the road is empty, so you overtake in a wide arc, after checking that nothing is coming from the opposite direction.
