How should you behave in the event of missing an exit on a road with heightened traffic?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
C. Continue driving to a place where can safely stop the vehicle.
Explanation
In the photo you can see the back of a lorry driving in front of you on a wide road with a slip road going off to the right and a 40 km/h speed limit sign. If you miss your exit on such a road, you drive on to a place where you can stop safely - the answer is C.
The Road Traffic Act requires you to be careful and avoid any action that could create danger or obstruct traffic, and you may stop a vehicle only where it is clearly visible and will not create danger or obstruct traffic. Braking before the traffic lights to ask pedestrians for directions (answer A) blocks traffic and may cause a rear-end collision with the lorry. Reading a map while driving (answer B) takes your eyes off the road, and the Act also prohibits using a phone that has to be held in the hand while driving. A missed exit means only a few extra kilometres: you drive calmly to the nearest car park, petrol station or lay-by, check the route there and go back. Reversing or making a U-turn in such a place is dangerous, and reversing on a motorway or an expressway is expressly prohibited.
