Question no. 11086 2 pts basic AM

You intend to change lanes to the left. Are you obliged to yield way to vehicles in the left lane?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the video we are driving in the right lane of a dual carriageway with two lanes in our direction, past 70 km/h speed limit signs; ahead of us other cars are driving in the left lane, and we intend to move over to the left lane. When changing to the left lane, you are obliged to give way to vehicles in the left lane - the answer is YES.

The Road Traffic Act requires a driver who is changing lanes to give way to a vehicle travelling in the lane they intend to move into. Giving way means that you must not force the driver in the left lane to change direction or lane or to change speed significantly. So before the manoeuvre you check your mirror and blind spot, judge the distance and speed of the vehicles behind, and change lanes only when there is a safe gap. On a moped you travel more slowly than cars, so you need a bigger gap - a vehicle behind will quickly catch up with you.

Legal basis: Art. 22 para. 1 and 4 and Art. 2 point 23 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
