In this situation, are you obliged to exercise utmost caution?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the photo, we are approaching a junction with a pedestrian crossing; there are traffic lights on a post on the right, with sign D-1 "priority road" above them, and a second set of traffic lights hangs above the roadway. The traffic lights are showing red and amber signals at the same time. In this situation you are obliged to exercise particular caution - the answer is YES.

The Road Traffic Act requires every driver approaching a junction to exercise particular caution - this also applies to junctions with traffic lights. Red and amber signals announce that green will come on in a moment, but at this moment there may still be pedestrians on the crossing, and vehicles from the direction that had green may still be in the junction. When you get green, this signal does not allow you to enter if you would make it difficult for pedestrians to leave the roadway or if you could not leave the junction before the end of the green signal. That is why, when you move off, you look around, let late pedestrians through and do not enter if there is no space beyond the junction.

Legal basis: Art. 25 para. 1 and Art. 2 point 22 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); § 95 para. 1 point 4 and para. 2 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
