Is the driver of the vehicle driving in the adjacent lane obliged to allow the vehicle in front of you to change to the right lane immediately before the lane disappears?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the photo there is a dual carriageway in a traffic jam between noise barriers; you are driving in the left lane behind a white car, next to you in the right lane there is a red car, and sign D-14 tells you that the left lane ends. The driver in the neighbouring lane is required, directly before the point where the lane ends, to allow the vehicle in front of you to change to the right lane. The answer is: yes.

The Road Traffic Act states that when there is a significant reduction in speed on a roadway with more than one lane in the same direction, and it is not possible to continue in a lane because the lane ends, the driver of a vehicle in the neighbouring lane must, directly before the point where the lane ends, allow one vehicle from that lane to move into the neighbouring lane. Traffic is slow - it is a traffic jam - the left lane ends, and the white car in front of you is the vehicle that will reach the end of the lane first. So the driver in the right lane is required to let it in ahead of them, and the next driver in the right lane will let you in. You drive in your lane to the end and wait for your turn.

Legal basis: Art. 22 para. 4a of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
