Do all drivers properly ensure the free passage of the emergency vehicle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo there is a dual carriageway in a traffic jam on a flyover; a fire engine with its blue lights and siren on is driving along the middle, between the lanes, the lorries on the left have moved to the left edge, but the silver car in front of it is driving in the middle of the right lane, without moving to the right. Not all drivers are ensuring free passage for the emergency vehicle (with flashing blue lights and a siren). The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act states that when heavy traffic makes it difficult for an emergency vehicle to pass, on a roadway with two lanes in the same direction, the driver in the left lane pulls over as close as possible to the left edge of the lane, and the driver in the right lane - as close as possible to the right edge. Most drivers in the photo have done this correctly: the lorries in the left lane are at the left edge, and the fire engine is driving along the corridor that has formed. However, one car spoils the effect: the silver car in the right lane is driving in the middle of that lane, so the corridor narrows to a width where a large fire engine has to slow down or stop. One vehicle is enough to block the corridor. The driver of the silver car should pull over to the right edge of the lane, even with the wheels on the emergency lane (hard shoulder), and leave the fire engine the whole width between the lanes.
