Question illustration: Did the vehicle drivers properly ensure the free passage of the emergency vehicle?

Did the vehicle drivers properly ensure the free passage of the emergency vehicle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo there is a dual carriageway in a traffic jam; a fire engine with its blue lights and siren on is driving in the right lane, but the cars are standing in the middle of the roadway, straddling the line between the lanes, instead of moving apart to the edges, and there is a lorry on the left. The drivers did not properly allow the emergency vehicle (with flashing blue lights and a siren) to pass freely. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act states that when heavy traffic makes it difficult for an emergency vehicle to pass, on a roadway with two lanes in the same direction, the driver in the left lane must pull over as close as possible to the left edge of the lane, and the driver in the right lane - as close as possible to the right edge of the lane, so that a clear corridor is formed between them. In the photo there is no corridor: the cars are standing in the middle of the roadway, straddling the line between the lanes, and the fire engine has to squeeze through in the right lane, right next to the barrier, between vehicles that may move at any moment. The correct behaviour for every driver: as soon as you see blue lights in your mirror, you pull over to the edge of your lane, even if the car in front of you has not done so yet. Afterwards you do not drive into the corridor behind the fire engine.
