What should you do in this situation?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. You should remain on the traffic lane you are taking.

Explanation

In the photo, in the left exterior mirror you can see a dual carriageway with barriers and a car which is just overtaking you in the left lane, right behind the rear of your car. In this situation you should stay in your lane - answer B. Changing to the left lane (A) would mean cutting in on that car, and answer C is false, because particular caution always applies when changing lanes.

The Road Traffic Act states that a driver may change direction or lane only while exercising particular caution, and when changing lanes, is obliged to give way to a vehicle travelling in the lane they intend to move into. The car in the mirror is in the left lane and is so close that any movement of yours to the left would force its driver to brake or swerve sharply - and giving way means exactly not making any movement that could force someone to do this. So you stay in your lane, do not speed up and wait until that car has passed you. Before every lane change you look in the mirror, then over your shoulder into the blind spot, switch on the indicator, and only after a moment do you move over.

Legal basis: Art. 22 para. 1 and 4 and Art. 2 point 23 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
