Question no. 10395 1 pts basic B

In this situation, can you change to the right lane?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the video you are driving on a dual carriageway in town along noise barriers; an extra lane joins from the left, and a white van is overtaking you in it; the right lane next to you is free, and the lanes are separated by a broken line; arrows on the roadway show the direction straight on. You are allowed to change to the right lane. The answer is: yes.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that the single broken line P-1 marks out lanes and - unlike a solid line - does not prohibit crossing it, and the Road Traffic Act requires a driver who is changing lanes to give way to a vehicle travelling in the lane they intend to enter, and to signal the manoeuvre with the indicator in good time and clearly. Nothing here prohibits changing lanes: the line is broken, the right lane is free, and the arrows on the roadway show that you may go straight on from both lanes. What is more, the Act requires you to drive as close as possible to the right edge of the roadway, so moving into the free right lane is not only allowed but also desirable. You do the manoeuvre in a fixed order: mirror, indicator, blind spot, smooth move across. Before changing lanes, you make sure that no one is coming up in the right lane faster than you.

Legal basis: § 86 para. 1 of the Regulation on road signs and signals; Art. 22 para. 4 and 5 and Art. 16 para. 4 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
