Turning right in the presented situation, are you obliged to yield priority to pedestrians?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the photo you are driving along a street in a town and approaching a junction at which you intend to turn right; by the corner building, at the entrance of a side street, a pedestrian is running. When turning right, you are obliged to give way to them. The answer is: yes.

The Road Traffic Act states that a driver turning into an intersecting road is obliged to give way to a pedestrian who, at the junction, is crossing the roadway of the road the driver is entering - regardless of whether there is a marked crossing there. At a junction without a crossing a pedestrian may cross the roadway, and the Act protects them precisely from turning vehicles. In addition, a turn is a change of direction, during which particular caution applies, and giving way means that you must not force the pedestrian to stop, slow down or speed up. So when turning right, you look not only at the roadway but also at the pavement on the right: a pedestrian walking along your road may be just stepping onto the roadway of the intersecting road, and the A-pillar on the right side of the windscreen can hide them. You switch on your indicator in good time, slow down and, if necessary, stop before the roadway you are turning into.
