When turning left in this situation, are you obliged to yield priority to the vehicle coming from the opposite direction?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
YES
Explanation
In the photo you are driving on a road outside a town; on the left there is a side road, and a car is coming from the opposite direction. When turning left, you are obliged to give way to the vehicle coming from the opposite direction. The answer is: yes.
The Road Traffic Act states that a driver approaching a junction is obliged to exercise particular caution and to give way to a vehicle coming from the right, and if turning left - also to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction going straight on or turning right; the same rule applies where traffic directions cross outside a junction, for example when turning into a dirt road. This rule applies regardless of whether you are driving on a priority road or on a road of equal status: the car from the opposite direction is on the same road as you, so between you the direction of the manoeuvre decides - whoever turns left and crosses the opposite lane waits. Before turning, you switch on your indicator in good time, move towards the middle of the roadway and slow down; if the vehicle from the opposite direction is close, you stop at the centre line of the roadway with your wheels pointing straight ahead, so that a hit from behind does not push you into the path of the oncoming car. You turn when the opposite lane is clear.
