Is it allowed to overtake in the presented situation?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
YES
Explanation
In the video you are driving along a wide street in a city which has two lanes in each direction, and the directions are separated by a double solid line; you are in the left lane and going past a lorry with a yellow tarpaulin and a blue cab that is travelling in the right lane. Overtaking is allowed here. The answer is: yes.
The Road Traffic Act requires you to overtake on the left and prohibits overtaking a power-driven vehicle, among other places, when approaching the top of a hill, on a bend marked with warning signs and at a junction, and overtaking any vehicle on a pedestrian crossing and on a cycle crossing and where sign B-25 or B-26 prohibits it - none of these situations applies here, and the road is straight and wide. The double solid line P-4 separates the traffic directions and you must not cross it, but you are not crossing it: you overtake within the two lanes of your direction, as on a one-way roadway. Before the manoeuvre you check that you have enough space, that nobody behind has started to overtake you and that the lorry is not signalling a lane change; as you go past it, you keep a lateral clearance, and you return to the right lane only when you can see the lorry in your interior mirror.
