You are driving a passenger vehicle with a trailer on the highway. What speed must you not exceed?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. 80 km/h.

Explanation

In the photo you can see a motorway with noise barriers. When driving a passenger car with a trailer on a motorway, you must not exceed 80 km/h - answer A. Answers B (100 km/h) and C (90 km/h) are limits for other situations: 100 km/h applies to a bus that meets additional technical conditions, and 90 km/h is the limit for a passenger car without a trailer on an ordinary road outside a built-up area.

The Road Traffic Act states that the speed limit for a vehicle combination - and a car with a trailer is a vehicle combination - is 80 km/h on a motorway, expressway or dual carriageway with at least two lanes in each direction, and 70 km/h on other roads; the 140 km/h limit on a motorway applies only to a passenger car, a motorcycle and a lorry up to 3.5 t without a trailer. The limit comes from physics: a trailer lengthens the braking distance, and at high speed it starts to "snake", which can overturn the whole combination. It does not matter whether the trailer is large or light - 80 km/h applies to every trailer. When you drive onto a motorway with a trailer, you keep to the right lane and do not exceed 80 km/h.

Legal basis: Art. 20 para. 3 point 2 letter a and Art. 2 point 49 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
