In which of these places can you stop a lorry on the highway when you feel tired?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. At the rest area.

Explanation

In the photo you are driving on a motorway - on the right there is sign D-9 "motorway", and in front of you there is a lorry combination. When you feel tired, you may stop the vehicle at a rest area (MOP) - answer B.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits stopping and parking on a motorway or expressway anywhere other than places designated for this purpose; if the vehicle comes to a standstill for technical reasons, the driver must remove it from the roadway and warn other road users. A rest area is exactly such a designated place - with a car park, often with a fuel station and toilets - and that is where you plan your breaks from driving. The emergency lane (hard shoulder) (answer A) is used only for stopping in case of a breakdown or accident, and stopping on it because of tiredness is prohibited and deadly dangerous. The exit road (answer C) is part of the motorway, so the same ban covers it, and stopping there blocks traffic. You cannot sleep off tiredness behind the wheel - after 4.5 hours of driving you are entitled to a 45-minute break anyway.

Legal basis: Art. 49 para. 3 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); Art. 7 of Regulation (EC) No 561/2006
