In the presented situation, are you entitled to make a U-turn at the nearest intersection?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo, in winter, you are driving along a wide dual-carriageway street next to a snow-covered shoulder; on the right there is sign B-23 "no U-turn", with sign F-10 showing lane directions below it, cars are driving in front of you, and traffic lights can be seen further ahead. You are not allowed to make a U-turn at the nearest junction. The answer is: no.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that sign B-23 "no U-turn" prohibits drivers from making a U-turn up to and including the nearest junction; the prohibition ends after that junction, or before it if there is sign B-24 "end of no U-turn". On a dual carriageway a U-turn is possible anyway only at a junction or at a gap in the central reservation, and the prohibition rules out exactly this nearest point. In winter the manoeuvre would be even more dangerous: a car making a U-turn needs more space and time on a slippery surface, and oncoming drivers need longer to brake. However, sign B-23 does not prohibit a left turn. So you change direction at the next junction without a prohibition or choose a route through side streets.

Legal basis: § 22 para. 5 and 6 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
