In the presenetd situation, are you entitled to make a U-turn at the nearest intersection?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo, at dusk, you are driving along a wide street in a city behind a dark car that is braking before a junction; on both sides of the roadway there are signs B-23 "no U-turn", and on the right there is also sign D-1. You are not allowed to make a U-turn at the nearest junction. The answer is: no.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that sign B-23 "no U-turn" prohibits drivers from making a U-turn up to and including the nearest junction. The sign placed on both sides of the roadway is a repeat - it is used on wide streets so that drivers in the left lanes will definitely notice it. The prohibition covers making a U-turn both on the section of road before the junction and at the junction itself; beyond the junction it no longer applies, unless the sign is repeated. Making a U-turn on a busy main road at dusk, when the cars in front of you are braking, would be extremely dangerous. If you need to change direction, you drive to the next junction without a prohibition or drive around the block.

Legal basis: § 22 para. 5 and § 2 para. 1 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
