Is it prohibited to reverse a vehicle in a tunel, on the bridge and flyover?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
YES
Explanation
In the photo you are driving through a lit tunnel with two lanes in one direction; a silver car is driving next to you, and there are more cars ahead of you. Reversing a vehicle in a tunnel, on a bridge and on a flyover is prohibited. The answer is: yes.
The Road Traffic Act prohibits reversing a vehicle in a tunnel, on a bridge, on a flyover, on a motorway or on an expressway. What all these places have in common is that there is no way to move safely out of the line of traffic: there is no shoulder, speeds are high, visibility is limited and there is no room for others to go around a vehicle moving backwards. In a tunnel there is also noise and artificial lighting, because of which drivers behind will notice a reversing car later. If you miss an exit in a tunnel, you drive on to the end and make a U-turn at the nearest junction; if your vehicle has broken down, you switch on the hazard warning lights, put out the warning triangle and do not try to reverse to the exit. Reversing in other places requires particular caution and giving way to everyone else.
