Question no. 8186 3 pts basic B

Are you allowed to overtake at this intersection?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the video you are approaching a junction with traffic lights in a city; the traffic lights show green, there is a straight-ahead arrow in your lane, and cars are driving ahead of you. You are allowed to overtake at this junction - traffic there is controlled. The answer is: yes.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits overtaking a power-driven vehicle travelling on the roadway at a junction, but it excludes from this ban roundabouts and junctions where traffic is controlled. The ban exists because at an ordinary junction the vehicle being overtaken may suddenly turn left, and others enter from side roads. When traffic is controlled by traffic lights or a police officer, conflicting directions are separated in time and this risk is lower, so the Act allows overtaking here. However, the general conditions still apply: you make sure that you have space and visibility, that the vehicle being overtaken is not signalling a left turn and that nobody is overtaking you, and you carry out the manoeuvre on the left, without crossing a solid line.

Legal basis: Art. 24 para. 7 point 3 and para. 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
