In the presented situation, are you allowed to keep the distance of 0.5 metre between your vehicle and the cyclist being overtaken?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
NO
Explanation
In the video you are driving along a narrow asphalt road through a village, with no painted lines, and ahead of you, on the right-hand side, there is a cyclist whom you intend to overtake. You must not keep only 0.5 m of distance - when overtaking a bicycle, the distance must be at least 1 m. The answer is: no.
The Road Traffic Act requires the driver to exercise particular caution when overtaking, especially to keep a safe distance from the vehicle or road user being overtaken, and states that when overtaking a bicycle, a cargo tricycle (wózek rowerowy), a moped, a motorcycle, an electric scooter, a personal transport device, a person using a mobility aid or a column of pedestrians, this distance must not be less than 1 m. A cyclist does not ride perfectly straight - he goes around potholes and wobbles in the wind or in the gust from a passing car, so half a metre is too little to avoid catching him with your mirror. On such a narrow road you overtake him by moving onto the left part of the roadway when nothing is coming from the opposite direction, and if there is no room for a metre of distance - you slow down and wait.
