You are driving a lorry of gross vehicle weight rating over 3.5 t outside a built-up area. What is the maximum speed permitted beyond this prohibitory sign?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. 80 km/h.

Explanation

In the photo you are driving along a dual carriageway outside a built-up area, and on both sides of the roadway there are B-33 "90" signs, under them signs showing the layout of the lanes, and a direction sign hangs above the roadway. When driving a lorry with a maximum permissible mass of over 3.5 t, you may drive at most at 80 km/h - answer B.

The Road Traffic Act states that the speed limit for a vehicle other than a passenger car, a motorcycle and a lorry of up to 3.5 t, outside built-up areas, is 80 km/h on a motorway, an expressway or a dual carriageway with at least two lanes in each direction. Sign B-33 outside a built-up area sets the upper limit for all vehicles, but it does not cancel the limits set by the Act - if it shows a value higher than the limit for your vehicle, the lower one applies to you. So the 90 km/h sign allows passenger cars to drive faster, but you are still limited to 80 km/h; answer C is wrong precisely because it simply repeats the value from the sign without thinking. The answer 70 km/h would apply to other roads, for example a single-carriageway road. Remember that the speed limiter in a lorry is set at 90 km/h, but that is not your speed limit.

Legal basis: Art. 20 para. 3 point 2 letter a of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); § 27 para. 1 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
