In this situation, are you allowed to overtake the lorry?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the video you are driving along a narrow road through an industrial area behind a tall lorry, which blocks your view of the road ahead of it; at one moment a passenger car coming from the opposite direction appears from behind it and passes you. You are not allowed to overtake the lorry - you have neither visibility nor space. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act requires a driver, before overtaking, to make sure in particular that they have adequate visibility and enough space to overtake without obstructing anyone, and that nobody behind them has started overtaking. The lorry hides the whole section of road, so you do not know whether another vehicle is coming from the opposite direction - the video shows that one is coming right then. On a narrow roadway without a paved shoulder there is also no room for a safe side distance. You increase your distance from the lorry to see more, and wait for a straight, wide and empty section.

Legal basis: Art. 24 para. 1 point 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
