How should you execute sudden braking of the tram?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
C. Press the brake pedal beyond the limiter and release the dead man's lever.
Explanation
In the photo you can see the pedals in a tram cab: the drive pedal, the brake pedal and the dead man's pedal. Sudden braking of the tram is done by pressing the brake pedal beyond the limiter and releasing the dead man's lever - answer C.
Pressing the brake pedal beyond the limiter switches on the track brakes, and releasing the dead man's device automatically cuts the drive and starts braking. Together they give the greatest possible deceleration, which is needed when there is a risk of a collision. Pressing the pedal only to the limiter and releasing the dead man's device only later (answer A) delays switching on the track brakes and makes the braking distance longer, and keeping the dead man's device pressed (answer B) does not use all the brakes. You use sudden braking only when there is danger. Afterwards, you check whether the passengers have been hurt.
