What might cause the escape of smoke from the Bogie?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
B. A short circuit in the motor windings.
Explanation
In the photo you can see a tram bogie with its wheels standing on the rails. Smoke coming out of a motor bogie may be caused by a short circuit in the motor windings - answer B.
The traction motors are placed in the bogies. A short circuit in a winding causes overheating and burning of the insulation, which you can see as smoke. A wrong setting of the reverser in the second carriage (answer A) and wheel slip (answer C) are not typical causes of smoke coming out of a bogie - smoke usually means overheating or burning of the motor insulation. When you see smoke, you stop the tram, lower the pantograph, make sure the passengers are safe and inform the dispatcher. You do not start driving again before an inspection.
