Are you allowed to overtake a cyclist, if the distance between the tram and the cyclist is 0.5 m?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo we are driving a tram on tracks in the roadway, and a cyclist is riding right next to the right side of the tram. You are not allowed to overtake the cyclist if the distance between the tram and the cyclist is 0.5 m - the answer is NO.

When overtaking a bicycle, the Road Traffic Act requires a lateral clearance of at least 1 m. A clearance of 0.5 m is too small - the rush of air or a small movement of the handlebars may make the cyclist touch the tram and fall over. A tram cannot leave its tracks, so if the cyclist is riding too close, you do not overtake them, but slow down and drive behind them until the distance increases.

Legal basis: Art. 24 para. 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
