What minimum section of the road ahead of the truck should be lit by properly-adjusted high-beam lights?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. 100 m.

Explanation

In the photo you can see a lit headlamp of a lorry. Properly adjusted main beam headlights (high beam) should light the road ahead of the vehicle for at least 100 m - answer B.

The Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles requires main beam headlights to light the road sufficiently for at least 100 m ahead of the vehicle in good visibility, and the total of their luminous intensity to be within set limits. The answer 40 m applies to dipped headlights, and 150 m is not a requirement for main beam headlights. One hundred metres is not a random value: at 80 km/h, which is the maximum speed of a lorry on a motorway and an expressway (on other roads 70 km/h), you cover this distance in about four and a half seconds, which is roughly the time you need to react and stop. That is why driving at night with a faulty or badly adjusted headlamp means driving "beyond the reach of your lights", and this means that you will not stop before an obstacle that you only just see.

Legal basis: Annex No. 6 to the Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles and the scope of their necessary equipment; Art. 66 para. 1 point 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
