What length of rest is a driver, engaged in road transport, entitled to after 4.5 hours of driving?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
C. A continuous 45 minute rest period.
Explanation
In the photo, next to a lorry, a digital tachograph and a record sheet with a record of driving are shown. After a period of driving lasting four and a half hours without interruption, you are entitled to a continuous break of 45 minutes - answer C.
The EU Regulation states that after a driving period of four and a half hours, a driver is entitled to a continuous break of at least forty-five minutes, unless the driver begins a rest period. The break may be split, but only in one way: first at least 15 minutes, and then at least 30 minutes - and both parts must fit within those four and a half hours of driving. That is why the answers with 30 minutes are wrong: neither a continuous 30 minutes nor two breaks totalling 30 minutes meet the requirement. During a break you must not do any work - loading or paperwork interrupts the rest, and the tachograph will record it as other work.
