How will you behave if you are engaged in an overtaking manoeuvre on a motorcycle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. In the event of a potential danger, I will refrain from this manoeuvre.

Explanation

In the photo you are riding behind a passenger car on a road outside a built-up area, on a straight section with a broken line. When overtaking on a motorcycle, if there is even a potential danger, you give up the manoeuvre - answer C.

The Road Traffic Act states that before overtaking, the driver of a vehicle must make sure in particular that he has good enough visibility and enough room to overtake without getting in anyone's way, and must exercise particular caution when overtaking. Since the condition is certainty, any doubt - a vehicle approaching from far away, a junction coming up, slower acceleration than you expected - means giving up; you can always overtake later, but you cannot undo a head-on crash. Answer A is technically wrong: for strong acceleration you change down to a lower gear, because a higher gear gives less driving force. Answer B reverses the principle - you should be in the lane for the opposite direction for as short a time as possible, so you overtake decisively, with power in reserve. In the photo visibility is good, but you still check the mirrors, the blind spot and whether the car is signalling a left turn.
