How should you cross a railway line on a motorcycle?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
A. At an angle close to a straight angle.
Explanation
In the photo you are approaching a level crossing with signs B-20 "stop" and G-3 (St Andrew's cross); the tracks cross the roadway. You ride a motorcycle across the tracks at an angle close to a right angle - answer A.
The Road Traffic Act requires you to ride at a speed and in a way that allows you to keep control of the vehicle, taking into account the condition of the road, and to exercise particular caution when approaching a level crossing. A rail is smooth, polished steel, and next to it there is often a groove or a raised edge; a motorcycle tyre that meets it at a small angle can get caught in the groove or slide sideways, especially in the wet. That is why you cross the track as close to perpendicular as possible - even when the tracks run diagonally across the roadway, you correct your direction so that you cross them at an angle close to 90 degrees, of course without moving onto the opposite lane. You ride over the crossing upright, at a steady speed, without braking or opening the throttle on the rails; accelerating on the rails (answer C) risks the rear wheel sliding. Answer B is the easiest way to a fall.
