What should you do while riding a moped, immediately before you enter a sharp bend?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
A. Adjust the speed in such a way as to avoid braking while I'm turning.
Explanation
In the photo there is a road among trees which turns right ahead of you; broken lines run along the centre and near the left edge, and on the right there is a kerb and a pavement. When approaching a dangerous bend on a moped, you adjust your speed so as to avoid braking in the bend - answer A.
The Road Traffic Act requires you to ride at a speed that allows you to keep control of the vehicle, taking into account the terrain and the condition of the road. In a bend the tyres of the moped are already working to keep it on its line, so braking in the bend risks a loss of grip. Increasing speed to "use centrifugal force" (answer B) is a misunderstanding - centrifugal force grows with speed and pushes you to the outside of the bend, straight onto the opposite lane or the shoulder. Moving close to the edge to use the whole width of the road (answer C) can take you onto the opposite lane and goes against the duty to ride close to the right-hand edge. You slow down before the bend, look where you want to go and keep to your lane.
