Where do you look when turning on a motorcycle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. In the direction you intend to go.

Explanation

In the photo the road ends in front of a fence with directional boards and turns sharply, and on the roadway before the turn there is a drain cover. When turning on a motorcycle, you look in the direction you intend to go - answer C.

The Road Traffic Act requires you to keep control of the vehicle, and on a motorcycle you control your line above all with your eyes: the motorcycle goes where you look, because your head, shoulders and pressure on the handlebars follow your gaze. By looking far ahead, towards the exit of the bend, you guide the motorcycle smoothly and see obstacles earlier. Staring at the surface just in front of the wheel (answer A) makes you react too late and ride straight into what you want to avoid - in the photo, the drain cover, which is as slippery as ice when wet. Looking at the speedometer (answer B) in a bend costs you a full second of watching the road. You check your speed before the bend; in the bend you look far ahead, with your head turned towards the exit, and you go around the drain cover on a line planned earlier.

Legal basis: Art. 19 para. 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
