What is the maximum length of a combination vehicle consisting of a passenger car and a caravan?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. 18.75 m.

Explanation

In the photo, a silver passenger car with a white caravan attached is standing in a car park. The maximum permitted length of a vehicle combination made up of a passenger car and a caravan is 18.75 m - answer A. The values of 17.75 m (B) and 15 m (C) do not appear in the rules as a limit for such a combination.

The Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles states that the length of a combination made up of a power-driven vehicle and a trailer must not exceed 18.75 m; the same value applies to an articulated bus and to a combination of a bus and a trailer, and the trailer itself must not be longer than 12 m. In practice, a passenger car with a caravan is about 10-12 m long, so the limit is not a problem; the masses are more important: with a trailer other than a light trailer, an ordinary category B licence allows you to pull a combination with a total maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 t, with code 96 - up to 4250 kg, and a heavier one requires category B+E. A combination with a trailer travels more slowly - outside built-up areas up to 70 km/h, and on a motorway and an expressway up to 80 km/h - and needs more space on bends.

Legal basis: § 2 para. 1 point 3 and 5 of the Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles and the scope of their necessary equipment; Art. 6 para. 1 point 6 and para. 2 of the Vehicle Drivers Act (ustawa o kierujących pojazdami); Art. 20 para. 3 point 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
