What position behind the wheel will help to reduce the effect of the so-called blind spot in the mirrors which occurs when you watch the road?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. Dynamic - bending your body and head away from the seat, as required by the circumstances.

Explanation

In the photo you can see the cockpit of a car with the steering wheel, the instruments and the left exterior mirror. The blind spot in the mirrors is reduced by a dynamic position - depending on the situation, you lean your body and head away from the seat to look into the area that the mirrors do not show - answer B. Sitting stiffly (A) keeps the blind spot in place, and any comfortable position (C) has nothing to do with watching the road.

The blind spot is the area behind the sides of the car that you cannot see either in the interior mirror or in the exterior mirrors; a whole car can fit in it, and a motorcycle or bicycle even more easily. The Road Traffic Act requires you, before changing lanes, to give way to a vehicle travelling in that lane and to exercise particular caution, and you cannot do this without checking the blind spot. That is why, before changing lanes or turning, you first look in the mirrors, then briefly turn your head over your shoulder, leaning if necessary, and only then do you carry out the manoeuvre. You set the exterior mirrors wide, so that the side of the car is only just visible.

Legal basis: Art. 22 para. 1 and para. 4 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
