What can you expect while braking forcefully in these road conditions?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. Decreased traction of the wheels to the road.

Explanation

In the photo it is raining heavily, and there is water standing on the roadway - cars are throwing up fountains of water behind them. When braking hard on such a surface, you must expect reduced grip of the wheels on the road, which is answer C. A layer of water between the tyre and the asphalt reduces friction, and at higher speed aquaplaning may occur, when the wheels completely lose contact with the road.

Answers A and B talk about increased grip and greater friction, but it is exactly the opposite. On a wet road, the braking distance can be up to twice as long, which is why the Road Traffic Act requires you to adjust your speed to the conditions, including the state of the road surface, and to increase the distance from the vehicle in front. Brake earlier and more gently, and with ABS keep the pedal pressed all the way down.

Legal basis: Art. 19 para. 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
