Is it permitted to perform a reverse manoeuvre on a bridge, if you exercise special caution?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo you are driving along a wide road in a town and driving onto a cable-stayed bridge with tall pylons, on which other cars are travelling. You do not have the right to reverse on the bridge, even while exercising particular caution. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits reversing in a tunnel, on a bridge, on a flyover, on a motorway or on an expressway - this is an absolute ban, and no amount of caution lifts it. On the bridge there is no shoulder and there are no exits, and other drivers are travelling fast and do not expect a vehicle moving backwards; a reversing car forces them to brake hard at a place where there is nowhere to escape. If you missed the exit before the bridge, you drive across it to the end and make a U-turn at the nearest junction.

Legal basis: Art. 23 para. 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
