Are you allowed to move away from the parked tractor, if the engine is running?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo you can see the cab of a tractor with the steering wheel, levers and a key in the ignition, and a car park with cars behind the window. While parked, you are not allowed to walk away from the tractor when the engine is running - the answer is NO.

The Road Traffic Act directly prohibits the driver from walking away from the vehicle when the engine is running. A running tractor with nobody in the cab may move off when vibrations shift a lever or when someone touches it by accident, and with the power take-off (PTO) or the hydraulics switched on, an accident with the machine can easily happen. Anyone can also simply get in and drive away. In addition, in a built-up area you must not leave the engine running while parked, unless the vehicle is carrying out work on the road. Before you get out, you switch off the engine, take out the key and apply the parking brake. Leaving the engine running "just for a moment" while you go to get your gloves is also prohibited - and it is exactly at such moments that accidents happen.

Legal basis: Art. 60 para. 2 point 1 and 3 and Art. 46 para. 5 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
