Question illustration: Are you allowed to go straight across the junction in the presented situation?

Are you allowed to go straight across the junction in the presented situation?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

The police officer directing traffic is standing in the middle of the junction with his back towards you (you can see his back). For drivers coming from your side this means that entering the junction is prohibited - so you cannot go straight on, even though the traffic lights on the right are showing green. When a police officer is directing traffic, the traffic lights no longer bind you.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that when the person directing traffic faces the approaching vehicles or has his back to them, this means that entering the junction is prohibited, and standing sideways - permission to enter. The Road Traffic Act sets the order: first the instructions of people directing traffic, then light signals, and last road signs that set the right of way. You stop before the crossing and wait for the police officer to change his position.

Legal basis: Art. 5 para. 1-3 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); § 108 para. 2 and 3 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
