When slightly changing your path within the lane you are taking, are you obliged to signal it earlier with an indicator?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo you are driving in the right lane, and in front of you a white car is standing at the edge; to go past it you need to move slightly to the left within your own lane. Such a small movement is not a change of lane or direction, so you do not have to signal it with your indicator. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act requires you to signal with your indicator your intention to change direction or lane. Going around an obstacle without leaving your lane does not belong to either of these categories. Switching on the indicator at every small correction of your path would mislead others - the driver behind would think that you are changing lanes or turning. You keep a safe distance from the stationary car and drive on.

Legal basis: Art. 22 para. 5 and Art. 23 para. 1 point 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
