Question no. 11224 3 pts basic AM

In this situation, can you overtake the cyclist on the left if you keep a distance of no less than 1 metre?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the video we are riding a moped along a street in town behind a cyclist; the cyclist holds out their left arm to the side, signalling the intention to turn left, and there is free space on the right. In this situation you cannot overtake the cyclist on the left, even if you keep a lateral clearance of at least 1 m - the answer is NO.

Overtaking a vehicle or road user who is signalling the intention to turn left may only take place on their right side. The cyclist is showing with their arm that they are turning left, so overtaking them on the left is prohibited - regardless of the clearance you keep. If you tried, you would ride exactly into the path the cyclist is about to turn into, and a collision with them would be very likely. A clearance of 1 m is required every time you overtake a bicycle, but it does not change which side you are allowed to overtake on.
