Question no. 10937 3 pts basic AM

Is it permissible to overtake other vehicles at this intersection?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the video we are driving along a street with a double solid line and a speed bump towards a junction without traffic lights; at the edge there are, among others, a no left turn sign and pedestrian crossing signs. Overtaking other vehicles is not allowed at this junction - the answer is NO.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits overtaking a power-driven vehicle travelling on the roadway at a junction, except at a roundabout and at a junction where traffic is controlled. Here there is no roundabout, no traffic lights and no person directing traffic, so the ban applies. An exception allows overtaking a vehicle that is signalling its intention to turn, on condition that you do not enter the part of the roadway intended for the opposite direction - the double solid line would not allow that anyway. In addition, there is a pedestrian crossing just before the junction, and you must not overtake any vehicle on a crossing or immediately before it. The ban makes sense: a vehicle from an intersecting road coming out onto the junction does not expect anyone in the opposite lane.

Legal basis: Art. 24 para. 7 point 3 and para. 9 and Art. 26 para. 3 point 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
