When turning right at a crossroads, are you obliged to yield way to vehicles approaching from the left?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
NO
Explanation
In the video we are driving along a residential street between blocks of flats, past parked cars, towards a junction with signs A-5 "crossroads" and D-6 "pedestrian crossing" in front of it. When you turn right there, you are not obliged to give way to vehicles approaching from the left - the answer is NO.
At an uncontrolled junction of equal roads, the vehicle approaching from the right has right of way. A driver coming from your left sees you on their right, so it is that driver who must give way to you, regardless of which way you are going. When turning right, however, you give way to pedestrians crossing the roadway of the road you are entering. Here the right-hand rule decides, because priority is not set by signs or signals - that is why you always first check whether there is sign A-7, B-20 or D-1 before the junction. Even though you have right of way, watch the vehicle on the left, because its driver may make a mistake.
