Are you obliged to near the right edge of the way, to allow the emergency vehicle, coming from behind, to pass?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the photo, driving at night in a traffic jam under a flyover; you are driving in a line of cars behind a navy-blue car, and from behind - as the question assumes - an emergency vehicle (with flashing blue lights and a siren) is approaching. You are obliged to move close to the right edge of the roadway to let it pass. The answer is: yes.

The Road Traffic Act requires every road user to make it easier for an emergency vehicle to pass, in particular by getting out of its way without delay and, if necessary, by stopping. When there is no room for a corridor between the lanes, the only way to make room is to move as close as possible to the right edge of the roadway, with your wheels on the shoulder or on the emergency lane (hard shoulder), if there is one, and to stop, so that the emergency vehicle can pass on the left. You do this without delay, but without sudden movements: right indicator, a look in the right mirror, a smooth move to the side, and if the car in front of you has not reacted yet - you leave it room so that it can move over too. After the emergency vehicle has passed, you return to the middle of the lane; you do not set off right behind it - driving "on its tail" is dangerous and gives you no special rights.
