Did the drivers clear the way for the emergency vehicle in accordance with applicable regulations?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

On a jammed motorway, a fire engine with its siren and lights on is squeezing between vehicles that have stopped in the left lane, but some of them are taking up the middle of the roadway, on the line between the lanes - so the fire engine has to drive in the right lane right next to the barrier instead of through a clear corridor in the middle. This is not what an emergency corridor looks like, so the drivers did not get out of the way of the emergency vehicle (with flashing blue lights and a siren) in accordance with the regulations.

The Road Traffic Act requires you to make it easier for an emergency vehicle to pass, in particular by getting out of its way without delay, and in a traffic jam on a roadway with two lanes in the same direction it specifies exactly how: from the left lane you move as close as possible to the left edge of the lane, and from the right lane - as close as possible to the right edge, so that a clear corridor forms between the lanes. Good practice (although the Act does not directly require it) is to form the corridor in advance, as soon as traffic slows down, and not only when you see blue lights. Other vehicles are also prohibited from using this corridor.

Legal basis: Art. 9 para. 1, para. 2 point 1 and para. 3 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
