Should you always stop before a pedestrian crossing marked as such?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the video you are driving along a street in a housing estate in town and approaching a pedestrian crossing marked with signs D-6 with plates T-27 on a yellow background; there are no pedestrians at the crossing. You do not always have to stop before a crossing marked in this way. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act requires a driver approaching a pedestrian crossing to exercise particular caution, reduce speed and give way to a pedestrian who is on the crossing or stepping onto it - that is, to stop when there is someone to give way to. When there is nobody on the crossing or near it, you drive over it without stopping, only more slowly and attentively. The Regulation on road signs and signals states that plate T-27 indicates a crossing used especially often by children; it calls for extra alertness, but not an unconditional stop - only sign B-20 "STOP" has that meaning. The correct behaviour is: slow down, look at both pavements and between parked cars, keep your foot over the brake and be ready to stop the moment a child starts moving towards the roadway. Before the crossing you are also not allowed to overtake or go around a car that has stopped before the crossing.

Legal basis: Art. 26 para. 1 and para. 3 point 1 and 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); § 47 para. 4 and 5 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
