Question no. 10455 3 pts basic B

In this situation, can you turn right before the pedestrian enters your lane?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the video you have stopped before a junction with traffic lights in town, intending to turn right; the traffic lights show a red signal with a green arrow to the right, and a pedestrian is walking from the left across the crossing over your roadway, just before the junction, approaching your lane. You are not allowed to turn right before the pedestrian enters the lane you are in. The answer is: no.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that turning on the green filter arrow of traffic lights S-2 is permitted on condition that the driver stops before the traffic lights and does not obstruct other road users. The pedestrian is crossing on their own green light and has right of way along the whole width of the crossing, not only in the lane where they happen to be; the Road Traffic Act requires a driver approaching a crossing to give way to a pedestrian who is on the crossing. Giving way means not moving if this could force the pedestrian to stop, slow down or walk faster. So you wait until the pedestrian has crossed your path and moved far enough away that your turn will not surprise them; only then do you move off, still watching the crossing.

Legal basis: § 96 para. 1 and 3 of the Regulation on road signs and signals; Art. 26 para. 1 and Art. 2 point 23 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
