Is it allowed to tow a passenger car on the highway to the nearest exit or rest area?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. No.

Explanation

The photo shows the blue sign D-9 "motorway" at the entrance to a motorway and vehicles on the roadway in the distance. Towing with a passenger car on a motorway, even to the nearest exit or rest area (MOP), is not allowed - answer A. Answer B is wrong, and a speed of 20 km/h (C) does not change the ban.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits towing on a motorway, except towing by vehicles designed for towing - to the nearest exit or rest area. So the exception applies only to flatbed recovery trucks and breakdown vehicles, not to an ordinary passenger car with a tow rope. The reason is obvious: a towing pair may travel at no more than 60 km/h outside a built-up area, while traffic on a motorway moves at up to 140 km/h; a slow pair of vehicles on a rope, whose second driver can barely keep up with braking, would be an obstacle and a danger. The Act also prohibits stopping and parking on a motorway outside designated places, and in the event of a breakdown requires you to move onto the emergency lane (hard shoulder) and signal the stationary vehicle with the hazard warning lights and a triangle 100 m behind the car. If your car breaks down on a motorway, you call a breakdown service.

Legal basis: Art. 31 para. 1 point 1 and para. 2 point 5, Art. 49 para. 3 and Art. 50 para. 1 point 1 and para. 2 point 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
