How much does a driving licence cost in Poland in 2026: PKK to pickup

A category B driving licence costs about 4479 zł (PLN) if you pass both tests first time (September 2026). The biggest item is the driving school (OSK) course, about 3842 zł on average. Add a medical up to 200 zł, a photo about 50 zł, tests at 56.98 zł and 229.99 zł, and the 100 zł document.

How much a category B licence costs: cost table (as of September 2026)

The table below gathers all the compulsory expenses for category B. Course and photo prices come from Rankomat's August 2026 comparison, exam fees from the price list of WORD Warszawa (WORD is the regional exam centre, Wojewódzki Ośrodek Ruchu Drogowego), and the medical examination and document fee from the Act and gov.pl.

The total assumes no extra driving lessons and no retakes. In practice many people pay more, as explained below.

What you pay for, step by step

The expenses are spread over time, in the order in which you handle the formalities:

1. Medical examination with a doctor authorised to examine drivers. The fee cannot exceed 200 zł. Details in the text on medical examinations for a driving licence.
2. A 35 x 45 mm photo, taken no earlier than 6 months before you submit the application. Usually about 50 zł.
3. The PKK (Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę, driver candidate profile) at the transport department (wydział komunikacji). Free, usually on the spot or within 2 days.
4. The course at an OSK (ośrodek szkolenia kierowców, a driving school). The biggest expense; what it covers and how to compare offers is described in the guide driving course: how long it takes and how much it costs.
5. Theory test at the WORD: 56.98 zł in Mazovia.
6. Practical test: 229.99 zł in Mazovia. Booking and payment rules are in the article on test fees and booking.
7. Issuing the document: 100 zł. The document is usually ready within 9 working days of the payment being confirmed; how to collect it is covered in the text on collecting your driving licence and the temporary e-licence.

Why exam fees differ between voivodeships

Exam fees are set by the regional assembly (sejmik województwa) under art. 56a-56b of the Act on Vehicle Drivers. That is why the amounts in Warsaw and in Rzeszów can differ by a few złoty.

In Mazovia, from 1 January 2026 the rates from resolution no. 179/25 of the Mazovian Regional Assembly of 19 November 2025 apply: theory 56.98 zł for all categories, practical 229.99 zł for AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, C1, D1 and T, and 288.00 zł for B96, B+E, C1+E, C, C+E, D, D+E and D1+E. People booked for a test by 31 December 2025 pay the earlier rates.

In the other voivodeships the amounts are similar: 55-59 zł for theory and 220-239 zł for the category B practical. Check the exact rate in your WORD's price list before booking.

What pushes the cost above 4479 zł

The amount in the table is the minimum scenario. Below are the expenses that most often increase it.

Practical retakes cost the most. Each failed attempt is not only 229.99 zł but usually also a few extra lessons before the next date. Three attempts at the practical and six extra hours of driving come to about 1360 zł above the minimum scenario.

How much a licence costs for other categories

The medical examination (up to 200 zł), the photo and the document fee (100 zł) cost the same regardless of category. What differs is the course price and the practical test fee. Below are indicative course prices from Rankomat's comparison (August 2026) and Mazovian exam fees.

For categories C1, C, D1 and D (and their trailer variants) the PKK additionally requires a psychological certificate. For AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, B+E and T it is not required.

How to pay less for a driving licence

You cannot save on the official fees, but you can limit the number of attempts and extra lessons. Here is what matters:

1. Pass theory first time. The question catalogue is public, and mock tests mirror the WORD rules: 32 questions, 25 minutes, the same scoring. Every retake is another 56.98 zł.
2. Consider taking theory at the WORD before the course. If you pass the theory test earlier, the theory part of the course is no longer required (art. 23a). Ask the school what its offer looks like in that case.
3. Choose an OSK by pass rate, not by the price in the advert. A 300 zł difference in course price disappears after one practical retake with extra lessons.
4. Compare itemised offers: how many driving hours are in the package, how much an extra hour costs, whether the internal exam is included.
5. Watch the deadlines. You report a change or cancellation of the test in writing no later than 2 days before; otherwise the fee is forfeited.
6. Get the photo right once, according to the requirements (light background, face filling 70-80% of the frame, no older than 6 months). A rejected photo means another trip to the photographer.

When you pay: expenses over time

At the start you spend about 250 zł: the examination and the photo. The PKK costs nothing. Then comes the biggest expense, the course, and only after it the exam fees, paid separately with each booking.

The last 100 zł is paid after the passed test, when you apply for the document. Until you collect the plastic card you can drive in Poland on the temporary electronic driving licence in mObywatel (the government's digital ID app), for a maximum of 30 days from passing the test.

Before you pay for the course, set aside a reserve in your budget for one extra practical attempt and three hours of lessons: 229.99 zł plus 3 times about 150 zł, which is about 680 zł. If you do not use it, all the better.
