What should you do upon determining improper engine oil pressure?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
B. Check the oil level and eventaully replenish.
Explanation
In the photo you can see the open engine compartment of a passenger car - the engine with its cover, the battery on the right, and around them the caps and reservoirs for operating fluids. After finding incorrect engine oil pressure, you should check the oil level and top up if necessary - answer B. Adding any oil (A) can damage the engine, and hazard warning lights alone (C) do not solve the problem.
Too low oil pressure is signalled by a red warning light with an oil can symbol. The most common cause is too little oil in the sump - the pump sucks in air, and the pistons, crankshaft and camshafts work without lubrication and can seize within a few minutes. That is why, when the warning light comes on, you stop in a safe place, switch off the engine, wait a moment and check the level with the dipstick; if the oil is below the minimum, you add oil with the specification recommended by the manufacturer in the owner's manual. If the level is correct but the warning light is still on, the cause may be a damaged pump, a blocked filter or the sensor - then you do not drive on, but call for help.
