You are travelling on a road at the maximum permitted speed, and in spite of that you see a vehicle approaching from behind and blinking the lights. What do you do in this situation?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. I'll drive to the edge of the road to allow for an ovetaking manoeuvre.

Explanation

In the photo you can see in the mirror a white van driving right behind you with its lights on. When you are driving at the maximum permitted speed and a vehicle behind you flashes its lights, you move towards the right edge to let it overtake - answer C.

The Road Traffic Act requires you to drive as close as possible to the right edge of the roadway, and prohibits the driver of a vehicle being overtaken from increasing speed during overtaking and immediately after it. If someone wants to overtake you, you make it easier for them, because a nervous driver sitting right on your bumper is more dangerous than one who has already passed you. Braking "to show the lights" (answer A) may cause the vehicle behind to run into the back of your bus. Speeding up (answer B) is prohibited, and on top of that you would exceed the speed limit. Whether that driver is breaking the rules is for the police to judge, not you.

Legal basis: Art. 16 para. 4 and Art. 24 para. 6 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
