Are you allowed in this place to turn right from the lane you are taking?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo you are driving in the left of two lanes of a roadway leading under the flyovers of a road interchange; the right lane branches off in a curve to the right as a slip road, and it is separated from your lane first by an area closed to traffic (marking P-21) with white diagonal stripes, and further on by a traffic island with barriers. You must not turn right from the lane you are in - you would have to drive across the area closed to traffic. The answer is: no.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that marking P-21 "area closed to traffic" (powierzchnia wyłączona) marks an area of the road on which entering and stopping are prohibited, and the Road Traffic Act allows you to change direction or lane only while exercising particular caution and after giving way to vehicles travelling in the lane you are entering. At an interchange, you must decide to exit earlier - where the lanes are still separated by a broken line. A last-minute turn across the hatched stripes and in front of the island is one of the most common causes of side collisions at interchanges, because the driver in the right lane does not expect a car to cut in front of them. You continue in your lane and turn around at the next exit.

Legal basis: § 90 para. 5 of the Regulation on road signs and signals; Art. 22 para. 1 and 4 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
