Show the correct answer
Correct answer
C. the road is covered with snow.
Explanation
Using snow chains is allowed only when the road is covered with snow - answer C. Neither the time of year (A) nor a temperature below zero (B) on its own allows you to drive with chains on a road surface cleared of snow.
The Road Traffic Act states that using snow chains on tyres is allowed only on a road covered with snow. Chains on bare asphalt damage the road surface and the tyres themselves, are noisy and reduce grip; that is why you put them on before a snowy climb and take them off as soon as you reach a road cleared of snow. Sign C-18 "snow chains required" requires you to drive with chains on the section shown, and C-19 cancels this requirement. You drive slowly with chains, usually no faster than 50 km/h, and it is worth practising putting them on at home, not doing it for the first time in a snowstorm.
